Budapest Honvéd winners of the 11th Greenport Tournament

Under varying weather conditions, the eleventh edition of the Greenport International U14 Tournament took place last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Anko Goudswaard, alderman of the Municipality of Westland, officially kicked off the tournament on Friday following a welcome speech by tournament committee chairman Gerben Voois and youth chairman Robin van Westenbrugge. All 16 participating teams then played two matches.

The tournament continued on Saturday, with four matches scheduled for each team. By the end of the day, it was already becoming clear which teams were in contention for a place in the final. However, one final group-stage match still had to be played on Sunday, producing several surprising results.

After the group stage, Sunday continued with the crossover matches, followed by the classification matches to determine the final positions from 1st to 16th place.

The match for third place was played between Club Brugge and Chelsea FC, with the Belgian side claiming a convincing 3–0 victory.

The final between Budapest Honvéd FC and RSC Anderlecht proved to be a thrilling contest. The Belgian side created the better chances, but the Hungarian goalkeeper produced an outstanding performance and kept a clean sheet. With no goals scored, the tournament had to be decided by a penalty shootout.

No fewer than 18 penalties were needed before a winner was finally decided. Budapest Honvéd FC came out on top and were able to celebrate the tournament victory together with the many supporters who had travelled with the team.

The award ceremony took place immediately afterwards. Every team received a trophy, while the top three teams were also awarded medals.
